Hello all from Nova Scotia: New to the forums but not to trading, had a discount broker account for over 16 years now. Looking forward to new opinions and the exchange of info.

Welcome to the forum. I have just finished purging promotional penny stock posts, however I read your post on Loblaw and am pleased that you are interested in discussion as opposed to blindly promoting risky ventures.

Cheers

Hi admin: The last thing I like is someone who pumps penny stocks. There are to many out there doing this, and you know its not for any benefit but their own. I use a discount broker so I am able to do my own research, so if I pick a loser or a winner, theres no one to blame but me. I quess my style of investing is a combination of market timing, solid company fundamentals, and a bit of a contrarian. I did a lot of buying in early 2009 after the market bottomed out, and had some of my best gains in a long time.

Early 2009 would have been a good time to buy. What broker do you like?

I use BMO Investorline discount broker, good homepage, easy to use and a $9.99 trading fee.

$9.99 fee because of portfolio value ( over 50k) have not run into higher fees. No service charges for account, I also have my rrsp there as well as a LIRA. No fees for any account except for stock trades. No mutual fund fees either.

Sounds like a fair deal. What about for people under 50k?

$29. for a trade although it can go up depending on the dollar value of the order. I like BMO because of price, fees, record keeping, and the ease of use of the web site. I haven’t tried others so there may be equals or betters out there. A lot of the really cheap commissions are on accounts you make a huge amount of trades on. I may make several trades in a month or none for 6 months, so these programs are not fer me. I don’t like to be locked into something I probably won’t use.
