Of course, everyone is investing to make money. To make more money than they originally invested, but is there any other underlying reasons that play a factor into why you are taking the risks?
Personally, I used to be a “splurger.” I’m not sure if that term is used in Canada, but it’s when a person has money and purchases miscellaneous items (that may or may not have been really needed at the time).
I thought a smart way to save some money for my future, is to invest half my paycheck into the company stocks. That way I don’t see any of it. I don’t have a chance to spend it or splurge. While I don’t expect to make a huge profit from Wal-Mart stocks, but I am using it as a savings account of sort.
So, what are the other reasons you have invested your hard earned money other than to make profit?

I think that is a great question. Personally, I remember picking up one of my parents investing books when I was 12 or 13, I forget the title, but it was about demographics and how different cohorts of the population can effect industry. An example that looked to the future was about the babyboomers who would eventually age and need all sorts of health related goods and services. I remember feeling as if I was somehow privy to information that others weren’t and really got a kick out of trying to intelligently predict the value of companies.
That was the start and ever since I have been hooked.

For me it was a business course I took in high school, like grade 10 i believe. Up until then I wasn’t really sure of what I was good at. Then we did a stock picking simulation and i profoundly better than anyone else that was in the course. I tried some real world experiences stuff the following summer and did rather well.
These days I invest my interest rather than for profit. Mainly because I see the value of the product first hand or have some technical expertise with the product. For example graphical editing will have have major shift soon with the release of separate computer processors etc.

My aunt gave me 3000$ and instructed me to invest it in the stock market. I made about 1000$ in a few months than one day I lost about 1000$. When my account dipped under 3000$, I stopped. Definitely a roller coaster ride, but I learned a lot.
