Analysts Price Target estimates

YE Price targets are posted for stocks (i.e. per G&M news). A recent report of all TSX stock price estimates was send out by G&M. In the aggregate and averaged for each sector, no sector is estimated to perform under 20% price increase by 2023 YE. I have to conclude that these Analysts price targets are inflated. Be nice to know if the data can be counted on or should be discounted when reviewing stocks. Can you provide any insight as to how Analysts set price targets?

Hey Tom,

Analysts' price targets are moving one-year targets. They change pretty much every quarter and as such, it is hard to put any real value into them. That said, you can use them as a guide to see if analysts are bullish and/or bearish on the direction of the stock. But I wouldn't really use it too much as the targets are not all that reliable. What I pay attention to most with analysts is the commentary they have on the stock. Sometimes they will have a bearish analysis, yet raise their target or vice versa.

So all this to say, at the end of the day we don't put too much stock in the actual one-year price targets. I'm more interested in the ratings (like buy/hold/sell) and what they actually have to say about the company.
