Desjardin direct brokerage announced “No fee” trading

Today I received an email from Desjardins online brokerage announcing “No fee” trading for stocks and ETF’s. To verify this, I went into my DISNAT Direct account and made a stock trade, sure enough, there were no fees for the trade. Is this a huge competitive move by Desjardins? Are the other online brokers likely to follow?

Hi Stephen,

Hard to tell. It was National Bank that started it last week, and Desjardins followed. I think most investors are hoping others follow suit but thus far haven't hear much else from the other brokers. Personally, i contacted RBC Direct Investing after the National Bank news and they indicated they had no plans to change.
