Q trade has requested that I apply for an Itin number because of potential tax claims. Is this a issue I should be concerned about?

I had to get an ITIN in order to get money back from the IRS. You don't want to do this. They don't want to give you one - you need to specify a reason on your application. I would look for another broker.

I owned Granite for years inside my Qtrade account and not once did they ever request this. Can you possibly ask them why and let me know their response? I'd imagine it is because Granite does pay a bit of foreign income in their distribution.
