Gold/Mining Stocks

I currently own Endeavour Mining EDV (purchased this past July), and Kirkland Lake KL (purchased this past August). Both are down approximately 20% and 30% respectively. Do you see these as worthwhile holding, or is there a better option youโ€™d suggest to switch to?

Much appreciated Mat - thanks for your insight. There are a small percentage of my portfolio, and if theyโ€™re fairly strong companies, Iโ€™ll definitely hold them then as a form of hedge.
Cheers!

Hi Don,

The entire gold industry is under pressure. I own KL and AGI and both are down like yours but have no intention of selling. You have two solid gold companies there. I own gold as a hedge against uncertainty/volatility. In a bullish environment (as we are now), gold stocks (producers in particular) tend to underperform. In a bearish environment, they tend to outperform and help insulate your portfolio. This is why I own gold - it is part of a diversification strategy.

I won't go overweight and try to keep it as a certain percentage of my portfolio (~5%). So should you sell or hold? That depends on why you added gold stocks in the first place. I would say however, that both of those (KL and EDV) are strong companies.
