Insider selling – GSY, B2G, SSL

Hi Dan and Mat,

I consulted the website Simply Wall street and it provides information on insider selling. First, is this website a reliable source? Second, it says there was significant insider selling in the last 3 months on GSY, B2G and SSL. Would you recommend against buying these stocks for this reason? How do you consider insider selling in a stock analysis? Also, would you recommend KNT?

Thanks!

Brigitte

Hi Brigitte,

Insider trading is one means of determining whether or not there is bullish or bearish momentum. However, you need to be very careful with your sources. For example, Simply Wall St.'s numbers are very misleading.

They include ALL activity including the execution of rights/options and the subsequent disposition of these. It makes it look as though there is a high degree of insider selling going on. The fact is, several executive and board directors receive compensation in the form of options, so its natural for them to exercise options and sell to generate income.

This does not indication bearish momentum in any way shape or form. What you want to look for is insider buying or selling on the open market not attached to options, warrants or rights. This is a pure play trade on the open market.

Even at this however, you will want to be careful. One insider sell or buy doesn't necessarily mean anything. Maybe one individual is selling because they need the $$ to buy a new home.

It becomes more relevant when there is a patter of multiple insiders making several trades on the open market.

Lets use GSY as an example, the number of buys on the open market far outweigh the number of sells in the past 6 months. In fact, buying has ramped-up considerably in the past month and there hasn't been a single insider sell below $70.00 per share.

Given this, I would say management is confident that GSY will rebound and have scooped up shares between prices of $37 and $55.50 per share.

I am not familiar enough with KNT to provide a well researched opinion outside of the fact to be careful since it trades on the Venture, and as a small-cap is subject to greater volatility.
