TFSA eligibility

I own shares of TRUL.CN in my TFSA. Today I tried to buy more shares and got an error message saying that this stock was not available to buy inside my TFSA. I asked Questrade chat, but the only answer I could get was that the government decides which stocks are eligible for TFSA purchase, not Questrade. Why would it have changed? Is this something that the government does? One day a stock is eligible and the next day it is not?

Hi there,

That is a very strange situation. I have never heard of a publicly-listed stock - TSX, TSXV, NEO or CSE - not being able to be held inside a TFSA. The government doesn't single out specific stocks - it has to do with the exchange. From the CSE's website - see the last question on this page: https://thecse.com/en/support/investors#:~:text=The%20CSE%20is%20on%20the,are%20RRSP%20and%20TFSA%20eligible.

They are eligible.

Further more, here is the list from the government which lists the CSE: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/services/designated-stock-exchanges.html

As mentioned, I've never heard of a particular stock not being eligible. I'd reach out to Questrade and confirm - even provide the links. I am not with Questrade otherwise I'd ask myself but that really doesn't seem right. Some brokers do limit transactions on the CSE, Wealthsimple is notorious for this, so it could be a change by Questrade itself.
