It's something to keep an eye on, but not something I'm all that concerned with right now. The US is making a lot of countries angry, and as a result a lot are looking to separate themselves. But with these payment rails, it is not so easy.
Building the infrastructure is one thing, but replicating the trust that Visa/Mastercard have built is another. For a new European rail to actually compete, it needs to convince millions of merchants to change their point-of-sale hardware and hundreds of millions of consumers to trust a new digital payment system.
We’ve seen this play out before, and it largely failed.
Separating from the US rails sounds good in a political speech about sovereignty, but in the real world of commerce it doesn't sound so good. The fact that Visa and Mastercard work everywhere on the planet is a massive advantage.
