Best advice for converting CDN to US funds to purchase US stocks

is the 1.5 conversion rate worth it – i was thinking about taking half my portfolio into US stocks – the returns look considerably higher than ours – just wondering if there is a way to avoid or reduce the conversion rate and if it still makes sense?
