Bond funds and Bond ETF

I have never been a fan of Bond funds some were down 12 % last year, So it would take about 2.5 years at 6% to get your money back. Been told I should have about 30% in bonds age over 65. Could you suggest a couple of good funds or etfs that would generate a good return in interest and capitol appreciation. Thanks

Bonds went through some very rough years, no doubt about that. However, if rates do trend townwards we could see nice capital appreciation in bond funds.

For returns, it really all depends on what you're looking for as an investor, as bond exposure can vary wildly. There are so many many maturities/structures of bonds.
In terms of bond funds, BMO is best in class I think. In fact, I think they're the best fund producer in Canada at this point in time.
ZAG is a solid option for someone who is looking for a complete bond rollup. However, if you're looking to take advantage of corporate bonds, which will pay higher rates of interest but be more volatile, ZIC is a mid-term maturity fund while ZCS is a short-term maturity fund.
