Choosing the right stocks for Canadian Accounts

Hi Dan,

I am happy I made the decision to subscribe. I have always liked your matter of fact presentations.

Being a Canadian Investor, we have a choice of RRSP, TFSA and Non Registered accounts. Can you direct me on the specific lists or portfolios on Stocktrades Premium that I can reference and would be appropriate for these different accounts?

Thank you in advance.

Thanks Dan.

Coming to your(Dan's list), which account or accounts do you invest those stocks?

Hey there. I think it is better to look at your portfolio as a whole and divide your investments up that make them the most tax-advantaged in each particular account. For this reason, we don't really have a portfolio for a TFSA, for an RRSP, for a taxable account etc.

More so what I aim to do is hold most of my dividend paying US equities inside of an RRSP in order to avoid the 15% withholding tax. After that, I take most of my blue-chip holdings in both the US and Canada and hold them inside of my TFSA as I believe you actually need to take less speculative positions in this account contrary to what many believe. It is just too valuable to lose contribution rooms to highly speculative investments, especially considering that you cannot write those losses off if they occur.

With my taxable account, I hold any sort of more speculative investments inside of this account plus any of the just general overflow of investments due to my registered accounts being maxed. For example, I'm not going to stop buying US dividend paying stocks simply because my RRSP is full. I'll buy them in my taxable.

You're going to see a wide variety of research, portfolios, stock calls, commentary etc here and what you need to do is kind of formulate and build out your own portfolio.
