Hi, I want to add a railroad to my portfolio and deciding between CNR or CP. Which one would you recommend and why at current valuation for a long term hold?

Thanks

Canadian Pacific Railroad is currently on our Bull List, you can view our full report here:

Ultimately, I do prefer Canadian Pacific over Canadian National at this point just because the potential tailwinds from the acquisition of Kansas City Southern.

This may confuse you, as I do own Canadian National and I don't own Canadian Pacific. This is merely a tax situation for me, as I'm not looking to sell Canadian National at this point in time and incur a capital gain in order to make the switch to Canadian Pacific.

That said, I do expect these two companies to be neck and neck over the long-term, with my opinion being that the acquisition will ultimately vault Canadian Pacific to a little larger returns than Canadian National.

Both of these companies are premiere businesses, and I would not fault anyone for owning one or the other, or even both considering that they do provide some diversity in terms of overall railways.
