GreenPower Motor Company (GPV.V) AND/OR Lion Electric Company (LEV.TO)?

I’m interested in the electric vehicle sector (trucks) in Canada and two names stand out as having significant potential: GreenPower Motor Company (GPV.V) and Lion Electric Company (LEV.TO). Are either of these companies on your radar and would you consider reviewing them? Thanks.

Hey there,

We are so very early stage in the EV industry that it is very difficult to pick winners. These stocks are also incredibly volatile and will have some pretty big price swings. IN terms of GPV and LEV, at this point I prefer LEV. GPV's share price got way ahead of itself, especially when it has been very sporadic in terms of execution. It also seems to be more dependant than others on government subsidies. On a rolling tweleve month basis it actually generated less revenue YOY - whereas most in the space are seeing increases.

Not that it won't ultimately be successful, but I have a hard time paying 20 times sales for a company that posted lower yoy revenue and operates in an industry that will have low margins. I'd like to see more consistency out of them first.

I do however like LEV - mainly becuase it has been in the space for much longer than GPV has. It has been slowly building out its expertise and is majority backed by Power Corp. As a result, it'll likely have an easier time raising funding to fund growth and expansion. This is another one that isn't cheap, but I do prefer it over GPV. It has a much stronger and consistent history of execution and I have more trust in the management team. I don't own it, although indirectly through Power Copr, but would be one of the first EV stocks I'd be looking at.

It is a newer listing, so likely to be volatile as well but it has much larger network of contacts and relationships than GPV. Not that you anyone should rush out and buy LEV or anything, but personally I'd be more inclined to lean towards LEV. It also just received a preliminary order for 1,000 buses from the Student Transportation of Canada - that really puts them in a different league so to speak.
