Goldman is a bank that is more so going to be dependent on market activity rather than traditional banking means. The bulk of its business comes from things like M&A advisory, equity underwriting, institutional trading etc. It's not like a bank like Royal Bank, which has the bulk of the business focused on the consumer.

Generally, the business that Goldman participates in is going to be much higher margin but also a bit more cyclical. This is exactly why you see the bank's stock chart being way more volatile than a traditional institution and is heavily influenced by market activity. This is precisely why we've witnessed it go on such a large run during the bull market of 2023/2024 and take such a nosedive in 2025.

It's a solid bank if you want exposure to that segment of the market. I prefer to hold institutions that are a bit more diversified and have exposure to it all (retail, institutional, commercial) etc but if you're looking for exposure there, it is one of the best.
