I think the deal makes a lot of strategic sense over the long term, even if the market didn’t love it initially. It creates one of the largest oil and gas producers in Canada, especially in the Montney and Kaybob Duvernay—two of the most economic and scalable basins in North America. They now control over 1.5 million acres and are set to average nearly 300,000 boe/d this year
If there’s a downside, it's that Whitecap shares took a bit of a hit right after the announcement, probably because of integration risk and concerns around the dilution.
I will admit as well, however, that I do not know much about this space overall. My research in the oil and gas sector is primarily focused on the majors.
Are you inside of our Discord? There are a lot of highly knowledgeable people in there about the oil and gas sector who could probably offer some outstanding insight.
