Hey there,
Until crypto makes meaningful progress as an actual currency, its simply guessing. But crypto and the many alt coins go beyond simply being a currency as there are many applications for tokenizing regular, day-to-day activities.
Since we operate in a highly legislated environment, I don't think much will happen in 5 to 10 years. Crypto will slowly continue to make inroads, but don't think for a second they will replace traditional banks in that short of a time frame. Maybe 50 years from now, but who knows really. Maybe by then, the banks/governments will have found a way to leverage crypto etc.
The biggest threat to banks right now are the alternatives like Equitable Bank, Versabank, Payapl and Wealthsimple which are starting to creep into their space. They are fully digital and cater to the younger generations and present a real threat to the big banks. On the flip side, don't be surprised if you say some of the major banks start to buy these companies and leverage their technology within their own infrastructure.
IMO Crypto is here to stay but are still in the very early stages and while I think everyone should have some sort of exposure either through an ETF or some crypto-focused plays, they will 100% be extremely volatile over the next 5 to 10 years. In other words, approach it with caution and the understanding that it may not materialize in the way people think it will.
