Hi IF,

It is to gage where you are at in your investing lifecycle. We used to have them named differently and tied to age, but the reality is that there are so many different stages of investing that it just led to confusion. So we changed it to early, mid and late to reflect where one may be at in their lifecylce. For example, an early stage investor is likely someone that just started out and is looking to be more aggressive. Perhaps they are in their early 20s, 30s or 40s - there is no real age limit.

Mid stage is likely where you are looking to still be a little aggressive but less so as you might be able to see retirement in the rear view mirror. Late stage is where you are either close to or at retirement.

There is no real perfect 'age' bracket as everyone is so different but hope that gives you the gist of it. For example, myself - i'm in my mid-40s and consider myself in the mid-stage area but a higher risk profile. Retirement for me is still many years way but it is something I think more of now than I did 10 years ago. But that is based on my own individual profile.
