REITS

I have 12k available and would like to add exposure to REITS in both an RRSP and TFSA, 6k per account. Trying to decide whether to purchase an ETF or the 3 individual REITS on the Dividend bull list and Foundation stock list – CRT.UN, Minto Apartment REIT,GRT.UN. If purchasing an ETF, what would you recommend, ZRE or RIT ?

HI there,

Both seem like good options have very similar performance. Honestly - it is hard to pick between the two. Personally, I own ZRE because i like the fact it has less exposure to retail than some of the more notable REIT ETFs but RIT is very similar.

In my opinion, when looking at two ETFs of similar performance and holdings - I'd go with the one that has lower fees. In this case ZRE has an MER of 0.61 where as RIT is 0.87.

Both however, are solid and I'd have no problem owning RIT if I didn't already own ZRE. Of note RIT has GRU.UN and MI.UN in their top 10, ZRE only has MI.UN. Neither have CRT.UN.
