HI there,
Telus is a telecommunications company and one of three that own an oligopoliy with BCE and Rogers. You can see why we like Telus in our foundational stock section. In recent years, it has branched out into different areas such as IT support service and health care.
Telus International is the IT side of the business and it provides support to multinational companies. This has nothing to do with the telecom or health care business, it is an IT and support service. Worth noting that once the company is spun out, it will still own 66% of TIXT. If you want expsoure to it all, then holding Telus will still give you that exposure. If you only want exposure to the IT and support service side, than holding TIXT will be a better option.
I foresee Telus spinning out Telus Health at some point down the road as well - similar to what it has done with TIXT. It will likely wait however, until the unit is more established and independently sustainable like TIXT is currently. We did a quick recap on TIXT here: https://www.stocktrades.ca/premium/telus-international-files-for-ipo-on-nyse-and-tsx/
If you want additional details on TIXT - good to have a read of their prospectus: https://www.stocktrades.ca/premium/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/TELUS-Int-Prospectus.pdf
Bottom line, if you want exposure to all of Telus' assets then hold Telus. If you aren't interested in the telecom or healthcare side and want pure exposure to IT and support services, then hold TIXT.
