Value of Advisory Board, STC, PMED

Hi Guys:

New subscriber, I am sure I still have lots to discover, but upon initial review, your site is very impressive with the various screeners, bull lists etc. Also, your level of interaction with your subscribers is very unusual from my experience.

I was going to ask your thoughts on Sangoma Technologies (STC), but when I did a search of the Q&A, I was pleasantly surprised to see you already addressed a question on it a few weeks ago. Another early feather in your cap. Just a quick point if anyone is looking at this stock, STC had a conference call a couple days ago and the replay is on their site. The Management team seems to be no nonsense and to have their strategy in place, which given my experience with some management teams is promising.

Looking for the next Well and DOC, someone told me about Predictmedix (PMED). Not a stock you would review yet, as revenue is just starting/about to start. But an interesting company that uses AI to screen for substance abuse, COVID and maybe mental health down the road. They have entered into some interesting distribution agreements in UK (Taurus Medical) and India with a collaboration with Tech Mahindra. But again, just start up and is a β€œshow me” company currently. My long winded question is what value would you attribute to the fact that Kapil Rayal a Director of AI Biz Development at Microsoft is on their advisory board? When analyzing companies, how relevant are the members of the advisory boards as an endorsement of the technology or company, or are they more for show and the person joins the board for options and shares in exchange for their name? Thx

Welcome! Glad you are liking what you see so far.

I didn't check, but believe I was the one who answered the Sangoma question last time. It really does seem like a decent little company. This isn't the next WELL or DOC, but it looks well positioned to deliver consistent double digit growth. Of note, the company announced guidance in October in which it expects to grow revenue by ~10% and EBITDA by ~16% next year. Important to note, that does not included any future acquisitions, which the company does have a habit of making. It certainly appears to be a well management company.

I am not familiar about Predictmedix (PMED) but will definitely have a look. We are in unique times where momentum investing is arguably at its peak - at least in my 20+ experience in the markets, I've never seen such volatility and such momentum in certain industries. DOC and WELL (both of which I own) are great examples of stocks going parabolic. I will say - be weary of looking for the next high-flyer and fall prey to FOMO (fear of missing out). Over the past week we saw many investors flock to JNH and CRBK as the next great telehealth stocks but their business models are nowhere near that of DOC and WELL. JNH is a prime example - it is not one that I would consider a telehealth stock. It is a clinic stock that happens to offer virtual health but uses third party providers (even one of WELL's) to deliver virtual services. For their part DOC and WELL own SaaS virtual health end-to-end platforms - they should not be lumped together.

Sorry - little bit of a sidebar there. In terms of the Advisory Board - it really depends. As a Board Member myself (sit on a $150 million privately held utility, part of Audit Committe and M&A Committee), there are board members of all stripes. Some sign on to 'cash in their paycheques' and for the company, they simply benefit from their brand cache (you alluded to this). I would say most however, are there for the right reasons. A strong Advisory (or regular) Board can help open new doors for the company. We've seen this play out at DOC and WELL. So to answer your question, how relevant are the members? I believe they are quite relevant - especially for micro caps looking to break through barriers and increase their visibility in the eyes of investors. A name along won't do that - you need a board member who will actively advocate on behalf of the company. Finding out if they are active can be a difficult task.

One way to do some diligence here is to simply look up the Director in question - do they have a history of serving on other boards? Good success? Poor success? If you look at the custom report we just did on GPV, you can see how having management of questionable ilk can also negatively impact a company. Same issue if you have Board Members who have a questionable history. You'd be surprised how much information you can find by simply Googling someone.

I think that answers the question - but also doesn't! It really depends on the Board member in question.
