What are the best foundational stocks to buy right now?

Hi Dan, I have a bit of cash to spend right now and after reading your article on defensive stocks, i’m thinking i’m better off putting it into foundational stocks from your list.

I already have CP, CSU, WCN, and alot of CNQ. I’m thinking Franco-Nevada would be good?

Can you recommend one or two of the ones on your foundational list that would be good right now in September?
(Is this an appropriate question to ask?)
Thanks!

It is a reasonable question to ask. The only thing I would say is what Foundational Stock is the best buy for YOU in particular depends on your overall portfolio makeup. For example, someone who has a lot of industrial exposure already in their portfolios, I might lean towards not adding another one in a situation like WCN or CP. Whereas if they have no exposure, it's an easier decision.

If you are asking me simply from a pure valuation perspective which companies are the best options on that list, I would argue you own 3 of them already in CP, CSU, and CNQ.

Franco is a solid company as well, but it certainly isn't cheap in the situation of rising gold prices. If gold continues to go up, there is more tailwinds here for Franco but obviously it will be exposed to the underlying movements in gold.

Couche-Tard is a solid play in a dropping rate environment in the States as well. If discretionary spending accelerates, we should see a pickup in activity in terms of their operations.
