What is a fixed income ETF alternative to a GIC for a retiree?

You'll need to give me a bit more information before I can answer this. What is the "alternative" you are looking for. Effectively, what are you looking to avoid with the GIC in the alternative. Is it the liquidity element, interest rate, etc.

Following your good advice;I have most of my cash and short term in non- reg. in HSAV. But all of my Registered non-taxable $$$ in in laddered GIC's. Should I diversify this portion more?? With what?

Well I don't exactly know what you'd want to diversify it with because I don't know the end goal here. Is liquidity an issue? Like do you need to be able to access the funds? Thing about diversification is it is often utilized to reduce risk. There isn't much more you can do to reduce the risk of GICs

Perhaps I am over-thinking but GIC's do have "reinvestment rate" risk in a declining rate environment ??So should one try to counter this risk with a long term bond etf??
