Fairfax Financial is often called the Berkshire Hathaway of Canada. Prema Watsa is the CEO and has often been called the Canadian Warren Buffett as well.
The company's are conglomerates, meaning they have a bunch of businesses operating under one umbrella and then they utilize the float money from those operations to buy various assets.
A prime example of the recent activity would be the company purchasing Sleep Country Canada (traded under the ticker ZZZ) for $1.7B.
I've never wanted to own Fairfax all that much simply because of my position in Berkshire. Up until 2023, Berkshire had been the much stronger company to own, but it seems like Fairfax is turning things around here and has been a huge outperformer over the last few years.
I still tend to lean towards Berkshire for a long-term investment, but would have no issues with anyone owning Fairfax. It is a high quality company generating a lot of value for shareholders.
